1986 - 1987 

Studied Sonology at the Royal Conservatory, the Hague (the Netherlands).

1987 - Jan.1996 

Studied Music Technology at the Utrecht School of the Arts, Faculty of Arts, Media & Technology, Utrecht (the Netherlands). Studied algorithmiccomposition with Paul Berg. Completed studies with Honours in Music Software Development and Computer Composition.

July 1988 

Participation at the first ‘International Summer Academy for Computers and Art’ at the Franklin College Lugano (Switzerland). (Short courses with Joel Chadaby en Mr. Peacock).

March 1989 

TV Broadcast of the (Realtime - interactive) piano composition “Contrasten” on TV program “Qwerty”.

January - March 1990 

Study period at the London City University, London (United Kingdom). Attended courses on Music Psychology (Eric Clarke) and Contemporary Music analysis (Simon Emerson). Together with Eric Clarke, Peter Desain and Henkjan Honing developed software for music psychology research (rhythm perception).

1992 - 1993 

Teaching assistant on computer programming (Human Interfaces and computer languages: C, Lisp and HyperCard/HyperTalk™).

July 1993 

CD recording of own works (‘Fractime’, ‘Pijl & boog’ and ‘Modus’).

January - March 1994 

Worked for a period of three months at LIEM - CDMC at the ‘centro del arte de Reina Sofia’ Madrid, Spain. Developing compositional software. (C.A.C.)

April – June 1994 

Worked for a period of three months at the ‘Zentrum für Kunst und Medientechnologie’ (ZKM), Karlsruhe Germany. Developing compositional software and working on a piano piece in combination with the use of interactive DSP (Next & ISPW), for which I developed several Max-objects.

July 1994 

Release of the CD ‘Dreams of Transformation’ : DJC CD 221 : Fractime, Bow & Arrow, Modus.

January 1995 

Worked for a period of one month at the ‘Zentrum für Kunst und Medientechnologie’ (ZKM), Karlsruhe Germany to finish the piano piece: “Spear & Shield“.

1996 - 1998 

Curator (music installations and concerts) and co-organizer Impakt Festival.

May / October ‘96 

Participation in a composition project from the NCRV (Dutch radio) in the “Walter Maas Huis“, (Bilthoven, the Netherlands).

1996 

Co-founder and first chairman of the Utrechts Composers Collective (UCC).

November 1997 

Performed several pieces of Conlon Nancarrow at the museum ‘ van Speeldoos tot Pierement’, (Utrecht, the Netherlands).

1997 - 1998 

Technical Support Hard/Software at the Faculty Art and Media Technology, Utrecht School of Arts (HKU). (Hilversum, the Netherlands).

May 1998 

Worked with Marco Blaauw on a live-performance for the Impakt Festival ‘98. Theatre Kikker (Utrecht, the Netherlands).

June 1998 

Worked with Harry de Wit for the opening of the Holland Festival ‘98. (Grand opening on the Leidscheplein, Amsterdam, the Netherlands)

July - December 1998 

Working at IRCAM (Paris, France), on the software project AudioSculpt, UDP and SVP.

April - June 1999 

Working on the co-production (Holland Festival & Zuidelijk Toneel) ‘India Song’, (dir. Ivo van Hove) Together with Harry de Wit, Sound Design and Music technology.

January - March 2000 

Created a composition for an exhibition (‘Bound’) of Robin Kolleman at the‘Paviljoens’ in Almere.

Worked with the Austrian composer Jorge E. López on his “Gebirgskrieg project” (originally a co-production from the RuhrTrinale, ZKM and ÖRF)  (Sounddesign, Digital editing, Spatialisation and Mastering of the 8 channel orchestral piece with a movie).

March – May 2004

Worked as composer-in-residence at ZKM, Karlsruhe on the music theatre production of Cyclotron, developing the music software and composing the music.

October 2004 – February 2005

Prolonged Working at ZKM, Karlsruhe on the music theatre production of Cyclotron, developing the music software and composing the music.

November 2010 – February 2011 

Working on the production: Electra’s Second Life. A combined project of the UCC with the Electra Ensemble. Resulting in the composition: ‘In Search of Cohen’s Kappa.’


October 2011

Obtained his PhD title at Sydney University, Australia. Title Thesis: “From Music Information Retrieval (MIR) to Information Retrieval for Music (IRM).”


January 2014 – June 2021

To continue teaching undergraduate courses in Music & Informatics (Computer languages and Object-Oriented program design for DSP and Music), C/C++ and LISP at Music Technology (University for the Arts Utrecht, The Netherlands).

September 2016 – November 2016

Worked at the ZKM, Germany (for finishing his PhD: focusing on software and the composition: ‘Zwicky’s Box’).

Compositions have been performed during the 'Nederlandse Muziek dagen' (Muziekcentrum Vredenburg) and different concert halls such as Theatre Kikker, the IJsbreker/Muziekgebouw aan ‘t IJ, Toonzaal, Zaal de Regentes, Lantaarn de Venster, ZKM (The Qube) as well as having been broadcasted on television and radio (Netherlands (VPRO, AVRO, NCRV, KRO en Concert Zender) and abroad (SWR/ARD/ZDF - Germany, Italy, ISMEAM - Hungaria, ÖRF - Austria, Tjech republik, Canada (CKCU), Australia and the USA).
